Four reasons why you should be pitching your ideas to the media

30 March 21

I understand, really, I do. If you’re not involved in the media world it can seem a pretty confusing industry. How does it work? Who are these people? Are they interested in what I do? How do I get in touch? Who do I get in touch with? How do I know what to pitch in?

These are just a few of the many questions I get asked every week about the media.

But, even if you’re a bit confused about the whole thing, I don’t want this to put you off pitching your story ideas in. And here’s why:

1  The word of new media is vast – magazines, websites, online magazines, blogs, podcasts, YouTube etc. And it’s some poor soul’s job to find great content for these outlets, day in and day out. Even on Christmas day.
This means of course that they need YOUR content.  YOUR views. YOUR opinions. YOUR stories. So, instead of convincing yourself that there’s no way you’d ever get something accepted by the media, give it a try. Make sure it speaks directly to their audience as they’ll love you for that.

2  If you want to have an impact with what you do, there’s no bigger platform to give you this than the media. A story or even a short quote in a media outlet says to the world that you really do know what you’re doing. They wouldn’t have chosen you otherwise. No respected editor would allow anything past the front door if it wasn’t good enough.

3  Only a tiny fraction of business owners use media coverage as part of their business growth strategy. Which is craziness. You can get ahead of your competitors so easily by simply adding this in. It doesn’t need to be big and scary, just set yourself a target to get one or two pieces of coverage each month then use them over and over to show people how fabulous you are. Like with any marketing, once it’s on your radar and planned in, it all becomes so much easier. Your potential clients will be very impressed.

4  You’ll be reaching many more people than any of your other marketing efforts ever will. Millions of people from all over the world are consuming media every day. And I know you – you’re a heart centred business owner who wants to share your work far and wide to help as many as you can. So, a piece of advice from you in the pages of a magazine or online or even on a podcast could reach, and be transformational for more folk than you could ever dream of.
