Five (or maybe six!) books to help build your business during isolation

22 March 20
As we face an uncertain few months with possible isolation, social distancing and all sorts of other crazy things going on with the old coronavirus, I’ve been thinking about what I will do if I have to stay indoors with no-one but Alexa (and the hubby) to chat to.

Learn and play was the answer.

Of course, I’ll still be working flat out on my business (it’s all online anyway) but when I’m not doing that I’m going to take every opportunity I can to learn something new – this thing is not going to drag me down.

Finally, I can concentrate on learning the cello, I can crack on with making the outfit for my son’s August wedding (please let that go ahead), I can learn to crochet, play the drums, start my book and get my skateboard out again (you can isolate outdoors right?).

But the thing I’m really looking forward to is learning more about the stuff that will help my business grow. Some of the things I’ve been procrastinating on due to lack of time and knowledge. Reading books, watching YouTube vids, listening to podcasts, practising new techniques/skills – I’ll be able to do them all and give some time to actually put what I’ve learnt into action.

How about you? Are you going to grab the opportunity to get stuck into something new? Something that will have a positive outcome for your business?

To help you along, I thought I’d tell you about my five current favourite business books – useful, readable and not too draining on the brain.

Let me know if you read any of them and what you think. If you’ve read them already I’d still be keen to know what you think.

In it together.

This book is all about creating a business on your terms. Work less, create more and design a career that works for you – that’s what author Emma Gannon promises. You may have a hobby that you want to earn money from, or a side-hustle  that’s ripe for developing – well this book will help you along the way, with lots of inspiration and advice.

I love this book by Amy Woods. She helps us use all the content we create to it’s fullest potential by re-purposing like a demon. Get off the ‘producing content’ hamster wheel and enjoy delivering way more impact in less time. It’s a no-nonsence guide with easily implemented advice and guidance. One not to miss.

Disclaimer – this is a book written by business coach and friend of mine Lisa Bean. Now even if I didn’t know her I’d still wax lyrical about it. She makes so much sense – encouraging us to stop procrastinating and to get things done instead. Even if whatever you’re developing isn’t your best version ever, just go for it. Create, deliver and then perfect. It’s an incredible guide to making a living doing what you love, without making it hard for yourself.

I think we all know this now  – telling stories is important for our business. But still not everyone understands exactly what this means or how to do it. This book explores why business leaders don’t explain clearly what they do, and then goes on to guide you through a number of strategies to help you tell your business story. This of course, can translate to more clients coming your way. The most successful businesses are the ones with the clearest message – let this book help you be a success. It’s going to be a cult classic this one.

Going in a slightly different direction, this book, by life coach Mike delves into the world of change with powerful tools that will help you to dig deep to discover what it is you really want. What are you afraid of? Who is holding you back? A must have book for business owners who are ready to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Jennifer Lopez is a fan!

Bonus book!

In crappy times like we’re in right now, journaling can really help – writing heals.

This book is like a breath of fresh air, guiding us to journal in a positive way to support us through depression, anxiety, job loss and heartbreak. Now I’m not suggesting this describes you, but grab yourself a copy of this beauty if you just want to know how to journal for empowerment and positivity, whatever your situation. You won’t regret it.

Please note – I bought all these books myself this is not an advert. Just books I love and think you will too. Enjoy.
